After studies in languages, education, music, philosophy and theology, he did his PhD in the Catholic Institute of Paris on Sacramental Theology. He is the Director of the Institute of Dialogue with Cultures and Religions, Chennai. He has been a professor of theology at Vidyajyoti College of Theology in Delhi; a visiting professor in various theological institutes in Manila, Thailand, Paris, Bruxelles, Louvain, Berkeley, Washington DC and Cincinatti; the President of the International Association of Mission Studies; a consultant to two Pontifical Councils at the Vatican and to the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism of the World Council of Churches; and an assistant to the Superior General of the Society of Jesus. His special theological interests are Indian theology and spirituality, the dialogues between Gospel and culture and the religions.
